First proper space scene I've done, so any constructive criticism is appreciated. Cheated a bit by making it black and white but I think it gives it the effect I was looking for. Made with Gimp 2.6. Might have made it a tiny bit too big but oh well.

I really like the melancholic feel of this piece, the coloring (or lack thereof) helps to convey a feeling of quiet peace that comes with loneliness.
My only recommendation would be to make the starfield a bit brighter, possibly throw in a few especially bright stars.

I'll keep that in mind in future. I think my one issue with doing that beforehand was that creating more stars really saturated the area with they light they shine off, but I'll see if I can find a way around that.

It looks to me that the planet is located close to the galactic core. You did a good job with the close planet's clouds. If you are aiming for realism, the only thing I could suggest is to make the planet's dark side completely black. However it looks good even as is. It is a very good first scene.

Ahh yeah. I was debating whether to make it completely black or not. In the end, my reasoning was that even at night you still get some light from distant stars and reflections off rocks etc..
